Man arrested in Kenosha homicide case; victim's vehicle missing

KENOSHA -- A man has been arrested in connection with the death of 36-year-old Jason Killips, a Carthage College student who was found dead in an apartment near 15th Street and 38th Avenue in Kenosha on Friday, Nov. 30. Police said this case is being investigated as a homicide.

The suspect, 39, was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 5, shortly before 4 p.m. during a standoff in Milwaukee. Police said he's believed to have been involved in the homicide. They said he was acquainted with Killips, and police don't believe this was a random act of violence.

Police said Killips' vehicle is missing and was reported stolen. They have asked for the public's help locating the vehicle, described as a 2017 Honda Civic, four-door vehicle, white in color, with Wisconsin license plates 270-WRK.

"He was really starting a new chapter of his life," said Pastor Kara Baylor, director of the Center for Faith and Spirituality.

Officials said Killips enrolled at Carthage during the fall of 2018, to earn a degree in chemistry and math.

"He was doing a great job at it, and unfairly, his life was cut short," said Baylor.

Baylor shared some words from Killips' professor.

"She actually sent a message for me to share with you. He was a positive and valuable part of his chemistry class and our class had a strong community. He always told us chemistry jokes and he went out of his way to help his classmates," said Baylor.

Baylor said plans were underway for a memorial in Killips' honor at the college.

Carthage College

"What we need to hold onto is Jason's passion for wanting this education. He came back at 36 -- his perseverance for wanting to do this," said Baylor.
