Latest: Waupun police find legal guardian of young girl found on steps of residence

WAUPUN — Waupun police say they have found the legal guardian of a young girl that they posted a picture of on Monday morning, Jan. 14.

The police chief told FOX6 News they got a report shortly after 7 a.m. of a little girl sitting on the steps of a residence. When officers arrived on the scene, they asked the child her name. They determined there was no one in the residence that the child was sitting at — and took her to Waupun Memorial Hospital to get checked out. The chief said the child was not outside long.

Police at that point contacted Dodge County social services — and posted on social media a picture of the girl. They also canvassed the neighborhood.

Officials say the mother of the girl noticed the social media post — and was at work. She reached out to officials. Officials say there may have been a mix-up involving a babysitter.
