MILWAUKEE -- Public works crews worked to contain a water main break near 35th and Silver Spring in Milwaukee on Thursday, Jan. 31. Workers tell FOX6 News they expect to see more.

Milwaukee police closed the street as crews worked to repair the break.

"Just got off of work and it's all this mess," said Zandra Mendoza, lives nearby. "My boots were white now they're a combination looking like cows."

Nearby businesses could do little to prevent their parking lots turning into a giant mess.

The city warns while they've had a relatively low amount of calls for water main breaks this week, big changes are likely.

"We are certainly expecting that number to increase over the weekend when the thawing occurs," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Temperatures over the weekend could be nearly 70 degrees warmer than Thursday's low.

The sudden drastic change is not good for old pipes that can burst underneath streets.

The city is asking for patience as we all cross our fingers it's the last polar vortex for quite some time.

"Hopefully we don't have to deal with this anymore this winter but you know how Wisconsin is," said Jon Eason, resident.

The City of Milwaukee says they had five water main breaks on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Crews are on call 24/7.
