Moments after the SUV went into the KK River, police -- who were in pursuit due to the suspects' connection to two violent armed robberies -- pulled up, and officers began trying to save them.

Nehmer was pulled out of the car by divers with the Milwaukee Fire Department, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is one of the worst calls we have been on," said Lt. Kevin Monoghan, Milwaukee Fire Department.

The bodies of Barefield and Hernandez weren't recovered by divers until hours later.

"As soon as I stirred up the bottom, it just becomes a swirl of blackness," said John Cooley, rescue diver.

Since the vehicle was pulled from the water, relatives and friends have spoken out about those who lost their lives that night.

"My brother was a good person. He had a good heart. He treated other people like he was their people. He'd take care of them," said Cortellez Barefield, brother of Charles Barefield.
