Dashcam, surveillance shows crash involving Saukville squad that injured 2 officers, another driver

SAUKVILLE —  A routine call to a domestic violence incident is halted by a dangerous wreck. On Friday, Feb. 13 Ozaukee County officials released dashcam video of a crash involving a Saukville police squad from Saturday, Feb. 2.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Highway 33 and North Riverside Drive. According to early reports from the sheriff’s office, two Saukville Police Department officers were responding to a domestic violence incident just before 6 p.m., when their squad collided with an SUV.

Officer Nicholas Goetz was behind the wheel.

Dashcam video shows Officer Goetz turn on his lights, then blow through a red light.  The police squad struck a Lexus at the intersection, left the road, hit a traffic light and jumped the curb. All air bags deployed.

The officer who was the passenger in the squad is heard talking about his wounds.

"The side of my head hurts, I'm bleeding on my hand, but I'm OK," said squad passenger.

Surveillance from a nearby car wash shows the impact from a different angle -- backing up statements from witnesses on the scene.

The driver of the SUV, identified by officials as a 53-year-old Random Lake man, and the two officers were taken to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton where they were treated and released.

Authorities say the driver of the squad, 26-year-old Nicholas Goetz, had been with the department for approximately one month at the time of the crash. The passenger in the squad, the 33-year-old Saukville officer, has been with the department since 2014.

Goetz was given a traffic citation for failure to obey a traffic signal.

Saukville police confirmed that Officer Goetz resigned just days after the crash and investigation.
