1 dead in chain-reaction crash on Highway 26 in Jefferson County



JEFFERSON COUNTY -- One person is dead following a chain-reaction crash that happened just south of Watertown on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 26 near Ebenezer Road around 11:30 a.m. Officials say a vehicle collided into the rear of a semi tanker.

While responding to the scene a third vehicle crashed, causing one of the wrecked vehicles to burst into flames. A passenger inside that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.

The Jefferson County Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.

Officials were assisted at the scene by Watertown Fire and EMS, Johnson Creek EMS, Jefferson county Emergency Communications and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office.
