MPD arrests Terron Clayborn, accused in hit-and-run crash that killed DPW worker

Terron Clayborn

MILWAUKEE -- After 12 days on the run, Milwaukee police say Terron Clayborn is in custody. The 31-year-old man is accused of killing Milwaukee Department of Public Works employee Bryan Rodriguez near 17th and Vine on Friday, Feb. 8.

Officers arrested Clayborn around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Rodriguez's widow tells FOX6 News, she's relieved as well as thankful for the Milwaukee Police Department's hard work and the community's ongoing support.

"It hit really close to home," said Teri Bashaw, The Bubbler owner.

Teri Bashaw may not have personally known Rodriguez, but when she learned about his death she felt compelled to show his family they're not alone.

"My brother worked for the city and I have a lot of good friends that work for the city and it's tragic. So we just want to help out," Bashaw said.

"The Bubbler" pub owner is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 23 from noon to 6 p.m. All sales will go toward Rodriguez's loved ones. It's a random act of kindness Bashaw also did for the loved ones of fallen Milwaukee Police Officer Matthew Rittner.

"It was a rough week for the City of Milwaukee," said Bashaw. "Seeing everybody come together, we had a big crowd in here Thursday and I'm hoping for the same Saturday."

Prosecutors say Rodriguez was filling potholes near 17th and Vine, when a car slammed into him and the back of the DPW truck. Terron Clayborn is accused of being behind the wheel. Court documents state Clayborn and a woman with him then fled the scene. While she came forward later, Clayborn remained on the run until his capture Wednesday morning.

"Everybody wanted him to be caught. Hit and run is awful," said Bashaw.

Bashaw knows firsthand how the community's support can help a person heal from loss. Her brother was working for the water department when he suffered a heart attack.

"I know it was tough when my brother passed away. People came to our side so it's important to come together," Bashaw said.

The Brass Monkey Bar and Restaurant in West Allis is also holding a fundraiser Wednesday night, Feb. 20 for Rodriguez's family. Those proceeds will be combined with the ones from The Bubbler.
