'Call it in right away:' High wind takes down tree branches, causes power outages

High wind leads to power outages in southeast Wisconsin

PEWAUKEE -- Officials with We Energies confirmed power was restored to approximately 2,100 customers in the Pewaukee and Waukesha areas amid a high wind warning Sunday, Feb. 24.

As of 12:45 p.m., there were about 100 customers still without power in the area.

Officials said a tree fell onto power lines, causing the outages in the area. Guests at The Ingleside Hotel in Pewaukee were among those impacted.

As of 2 p.m., the We Energies Outage Map showed power outages in southeast Wisconsin, the Fox Valley and the UP in Michigan. Brendan Conway, spokesman for We Energies, said in an update around 8:30 p.m. crews restored power to more than 20,000 since Sunday morning -- battling the wind, freezing temperatures and heavy snow.

“Today has been wind, and the biggest thing that tends to happen is that we have tree branches, and tree branches will fall, come in contact with our power lines and that will cause outages. We’ve seen scattered outages on that so far today. So if we’re going to have outages, it’s usually caused by the same thing. Oftentimes it’s caused by trees or other vegetation coming in contact with the lines. We need people to call us. So if you have an outage, give us a call, because we might not know where exactly that outage is. What we ask is for people to be patient and let us know. If you see a downed power line, always assume that it is energized. Stay at least 25 feet away. Call it in right away," said Conway.
