'Inclement beyond any measure:' City of Milwaukee winter parking regulations extended until March 15

MILWAUKEE -- The harsh weather conditions are taking a toll on parking in downtown Milwaukee -- which is why the Department of Public Works is extending winter parking regulations.

The regulations have been extended until March 15, but only for streets that are posted with "No Parking December 1 - March 1" signs. City workers say this extension is pretty rare.

"The last six weeks have been inclement beyond any measure I can recall," said Thomas Woznick, Parking Services manager.

Harsh winter weather conditions have left massive mounds of snow along the streets of Milwaukee.

"They're mainly, primarily and only narrower streets," said Woznick.

The last time the city put an extension like this was 1985.

"It's a rare occurrence where we would need to enact such an order," said Woznick.

City workers say this is to ensure safety on narrower streets that allow parking on both sides of the street during the non-winter months. It's something that Marjorie Maguire is happy to hear.

"I'm very happy with all this snow because people park right across the street from me," said Maguire. "When I go out the driveway, if cars are very close there, it's really hard to maneuver."

She thinks parking regulations should be in effect longer. A neighbor down the street agrees that parking in the area is a mess.

"It gets pretty vicious, and you kind of have to fight for your spot sometimes," said Whitney Anderson, Milwaukee.

As snow remains on all sides of the street, so does the need for more parking places.

"We didn't want to do it any longer than that, because we realize there is a need and goal for parking," said Woznick.

Failure to comply with this parking regulation will result in a $35 citation. Vehicles may also be subject to towing. Remember, all vehicles need a valid parking permit to park during overnight hours on city streets.
