Officials: Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery closed through weekend due to pest infestation

Rock Bottom Brewery closed

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Health Department says Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery (740 N. Plankinton Ave.) has been temporarily closed due to a pest infestation. A sign on the door at the establishment says it will be closed through the weekend.

An "order to cease operations" was issued on Thursday, March 7 -- when inspectors visited the establishment. The inspection report indicates there were "numerous live and dead cockroaches seen in the kitchen area and in the basement area where some food is stored."

"That's just gross to me," said Sacha Speed, lives in Milwaukee. "I won't eat there ever again."

Some people are saying Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery has hit rock bottom.

"If there's dead and alive and they're not cleaning up, well they're not clean as it is because they're attracting cockroaches and not doing anything about it. And then they're not cleaning up the ones that have died and that's even worse," Speed said.

However, some say it's not the only restaurant that's had a pest problem, and don't look at this as something that will affect business.

"If they clean it up it'll be alright," said Geoffrey Toumayan.

Officials say there is a follow-up inspection that will occur later Friday, and if Rock Bottom corrects the issues it will be allowed to reopen.

"I hope that it would be that they would take the time and not rush to open up just to make money," Speed said.

A sign on the door indicates the restaurant hopes to open their doors less than 24 hours later. Health officials indicate follow-up inspection will occur next week to make sure they've fixed the problem.

Health officials indicated in the report that a re-inspection to assess these violations will be conducted on or about March 21.
