'Another young life gone:' 1 dead, 2 hurt following crash near 37th and Locust



MILWAUKEE -- One person is dead and two others are hurt following a crash near 37th and Locust Saturday afternoon, March 30. The area was taped off for hours as police sifted through the aftermath of the horrific crash.

"It's just sad out here. It's sad," said Janis Butler, lives nearby.

The smashed vehicle sat unrecognizable; its frame mangled after intense impact.

"I don't know. I really can't describe it. I see the fender, the crunched up car," said Butler.

Janis Butler says all of it is painful to see.

"It hurts because it is so every day. This is what you see and this is what is going on," said Butler.

The Milwaukee Fire Department confirms one person was killed, two others were taken to the hospital.

Neighbors say they heard an exchange of gunfire and saw the car speeding down the street before it crashed.

"I'm saddened by it. That's another young life gone," said Butler.

With their community blocked off for much of the day, neighbors watched as police worked the scene. Authorities spent over five hours on the block before the damaged vehicle was hauled away.

Those who love the neighborhood say they hope to never see a scene like that there again. Butler says her focus is on the victim's family and helping strengthen a community touched by tragedy.

"I don't know the people. I don't know the situation. I know the communities in Milwaukee. We need prayer," Butler said.

Another car was towed away from the scene. Police have not said if it was involved in the chase and crash.
