Gov. Evers says proposal to give driver's licenses, IDs to illegal immigrants is 'common sense'

MADISON — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers says it is "common sense" to make driver's licenses and state ID cards available to people who are living in the country illegally.

But Evers told an audience at the Milwaukee Press Club on Tuesday that he expects the proposal to be one of the first things removed from his state budget bill.

Republicans control the Legislature. Typically, the budget-writing committee removes non-budget policy items from the two-year spending plan. That means the proposal would have to pass as a separate bill, a process that is typically more difficult than moving as part of the budget.

Hundreds of people, including many immigrants, are scheduled to rally in support of the Evers proposal at the Capitol on Wednesday as part of nationwide May Day events.
