MILWAUKEE -- A 3-year-old was in the hospital in critical but stable condition after the child was struck by a vehicle near 13th and Hayes Saturday night, May 4. Traffic lights in the area are spaced far apart, so it's easy to pick up speed. Additionally, there are no marked crosswalks -- and neighbors said traffic is non-stop.

"From Monday through Sunday -- what you see now. It's every day," said Aaron, a neighbor.

"I was just almost hit by a motorcycle crossing the street with my two little ones," said Ashley, a neighbor.

According to police, the child ran into the street just before 7:30 p.m. A vehicle traveling south on 13th Street struck the child while the child was crossing the street. Police said family members were inside a home in the area and in the backyard -- during a gathering -- when the incident happened, and believed the child may have gone out the front door without anyone seeing the child.

The child was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan who witnessed the crash.

"We seen a whole bunch of cops," said Sophia Martin. "They closed the street. They closed this street over here."

Video shared with FOX6 News by Thomas Klitzka showed a crowd gathered to help the child. Their heartbreaking journey to the hospital was also caught on camera.

"There he was -- laying in the middle of the street," said Aaron.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene and was released from the scene after the investigation.

As the mother of young children, Ashley said it shouldn't take a child getting hurt for others to slow down.

"You see people speeding off now, so yeah. These young children -- they are just starting to live. For him to be hit -- his life could be drastically changed," she said.
