West Allis PD: 17-year-old shot, found dead on front lawn of home near 56th and Greenfield 



WEST ALLIS -- Startled out of bed by gunshots, neighbors in the area of 56th and Greenfield in West Allis were frightened as gunfire rang out early Friday morning, June 14. Police said they found a young man fatally shot, lying on the front lawn of his home. Police on Monday, June 17 identified the victim as Donavagn Swanagan, 17.

Police on Monday said the incident stemmed from an altercation between parties known to one another, and they were searching for known suspects.

According to police, around 1:15 a.m. Friday, officers responded to the area for reports of gunshots being heard. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, who had been shot. He died as a result of his injuries.

Byron Hoaglan was one of the many in the area who emerged from their home in the darkness of night to see police lights illuminating the area.

"There were cops everywhere," said Hoaglan.

"The police had the street shut down," said Brandon Kerwin, neighbor.

"It's pretty shocking to hear that someone has been shot to death," said Robert Horning, neighbor.

While some were surprised, others said they're fed up with the gunfire.

"My vehicle got shot basically right where it is a year-and-a-half ago. There were five or six vehicles on the street that got shot up," said Kerwin.

The shooting left many residents on edge.

"I have three kids sleeping upstairs. What if a stray bullet went... being so close. You never know. It doesn't have a name," said Hoaglan.
