MPS, city leaders welcome back early start students with celebration

MILWAUKEE -- Students in Milwaukee Public Schools' early start schools were back in class on Monday, Aug. 12. Classes at 43 out of MPS’ 160 schools started on Monday -- including all high schools.

The school year started with a big bang at Golda Meir -- and it wasn't any quieter inside as staff welcomed students for the start of the new year.

Students walked a red carpet into school. They were welcomed by the Meir drumline, and were cheered on by parents, teachers, and special guests, including Superintendent Keith Posley, community leaders, members of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, MPS staff, and MTEA members.

"I think it's crazy," said Jeremy Nathan, student.

Amiracle Williams was expected to enter sixth grade. Her dad said he's happy she goes to one of the schools where classes start in August.

"It gives me a break," said Clent Williams. "I start work early in the morning."

Golda Meir is one of the 43 schools that are on the early start calendar.

City leaders like Mayor Tom Barrett and Sheriff Earnell Lucas were in line to show their support.

"We have our most precious resource in here, and that is our students," said Sheriff Lucas.

Superintendent Posley said the focus for the new school year is what he called "Instruction Plan 2.0" -- focused on basics.

"Our goal is to build a strong foundation in our young people in the area of math, reading, and writing, and if young people possess a strong foundation, they can go and do anything they desire," said Superintendent Posley.

There was a whole lot of excitement, with only one person admitting some hesitation.

"I'm kind of nervous, but I think she'll be OK," said Williams.

Following the celebration, school leaders geared up to roll out the red carpet again on Sept. 3, when classes begin at the remainder of schools.
