'A beautiful soul:' 18-year-old man died after he was found in vehicle with gunshot wound

MILWAUKEE -- A man, 18, died at the scene of a shooting near 7th and Pierce on Milwaukee's south side Wednesday night, Aug. 14 -- his body left under an overpass.

According to police, around 8:15 p.m., officers were flagged down about a person in a vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle, they found the victim with a life-threatening gunshot wound.

"Last night, we were in bed," said Cassie Rodriguez, neighbor. "We hard a loud pop, but did not hear anything after that. It was little nerve-wracking at first, but the cops were wonderful. They did a really good job securing the area."

Officers and MFD attempted life-saving measures, however, the man died at the scene. The medical examiner identified him as Maurice Grimes.

"He's a beautiful soul," said Brandon Redd, who worked with Grimes, buying and selling cars in the area. "He has charisma and everything."

Redd said Grimes was remarkable, and regularly motivated others with his work ethic.

"He would inspire me to want to take my game to the next level," said Redd.

Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying it appeared to be drug related.

"What hurts the most is the unknowns," said Redd. "How young he is...he still didn't live his life yet. He has a lot to learn. He's going to be remembered as a young, phenomenal phenom, who had his whole life ahead of him. The sky was the limit."
