1 dead, another hurt after head-on collision on I-94 near WIS 67

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- A head-on collision on I-94 just west of Highway 67 left one person dead and another injured. The crash caused a freeway closure and massive backups on the interstate.

The crash happened around 9:40 a.m. Friday morning in Waukesha County. Westbound lanes were closed for nearly three hours. Drivers were concerned, and also confused where to go.

Officials say a car traveling eastbound on I-94 hit a vehicle going westbound. One of the vehicles caught on fire. State troopers were told each driver was pinned inside their vehicles. The crash temporarily shut down all westbound lanes of I-94.

"I've never seen it shut down here," said Rick Passmore from East Troy.

"Trying to get on the interstate," said Cheryl Fliess from Union Grove. "I can't get on it."

Drivers caught in the gridlock say they were stuck in the traffic for a long time.

"Got stuck in this traffic, and it's taking us 45 minutes to go the last couple of miles," said Passmore.

"What should have been 10 minutes turned into almost 25 or 30 minutes," said Jordan Burac from Hartland.

Some out of town drivers had to pull over and figure out the best route.

"I just had to pull over to see where I could try to get on," said Fliess.

On Saturday, August 17, officials released the names of the victims. A 64-year-old man from Delafield named Michael Edwards was identified as the deceased motorist. A 36-year-old man from Lake Mills is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
