'It's ridiculous:' 12-year-old girl shot while sitting on her bed near 38th and Roosevelt

MILWAUKEE -- A 12-year-old girl was shot in her bedroom near 38th and Roosevelt early Sunday morning, Aug. 18.

It happened just after midnight. Police said the girl was sitting on her bed when bullets entered her bedroom and struck her. She was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Family said Tamishay Washington was struck in the knee and hand.

"It's just shocking hearing it in this area," said Vernisha Jefferson, neighbor.

According to family, Washington was on her laptop when the bullets came through her window.

"I'm a mother of two, and it breaks my heart hearing about these kids getting shot," said Jefferson.

Jefferson grew up down the street, and said the block is usually quiet.

"It's ridiculous and heartbreaking hearing that," said Jefferson.

Police said the investigation was ongoing, and the shooter(s) were being sought. The family said they believe they might know who was responsible.

"I just hope something happens, as far as justice, because it's getting out of hand now," said Jefferson. "Pray for Milwaukee."
