'Didn't know where I was:' Man said he was high, dozed off after break-in caught on camera

GREENFIELD -- Technology thwarted a burglary at a home on S. 33rd Street just south of Morgan in Greenfield. Surveillance cameras captured the man breaking in, as the homeowner watched on his phone.

The man, 33, from Milwaukee, told officers he was sleeping at the home. By Wednesday night, Sept. 4, he'd found a bed at the Milwaukee County Jail, after police quickly responded to the homeowner's call Wednesday morning.

"You have to be kind of crazy to do something like that in the day," said Tyler Pierce. " Especially in this kind of neighborhood."

The homeowners were away, but watching Next camera footage live from a phone -- quickly calling Greenfield police.

Body camera footage showed their encounter with the man up in a window.

"Just keep your hands out the window here, OK?" an officer said in the video. "My partners here are going to go in, so be cool."

The man told officers he was high, and dozed off.

"I went to go take pee," he said in the video. "I saw you guys creeping around. I stuck my head out because I just woke up and didn't know where the (expletive) I was."

Neighbors like Pierce were relieved he was arrested.

"I'm glad they got them," said Pierce. "Discourage other people from coming around here. Technology works for everybody, I guess. Didn't work for the burglar."
