Police: Stolen vehicle slammed into 2 others near 13th and Layton after retail theft, pursuit

MILWAUKEE -- Two people were taken into custody early Thursday morning, Sept. 5 following a police pursuit and crash involving a stolen vehicle. The pursuit began in Greenfield following reports of a retail theft -- and ended in Milwaukee.

According to police, around 12:20 a.m., Greenfield officers were dispatched to a retail theft at Meijer on Layton Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle headed eastbound on Layton Avenue without headlights on.

The driver failed to stop for officers -- continuing at speeds up to 90 miles per hour -- weaving through construction barrels along Layton Avenue in an effort to lose police.

Less than 20 seconds later, as the vehicle entered the intersection at 13th Street and Layton Avenue, it struck two occupied vehicles. The vehicle being pursued rolled over and come to rest on the roof. Two men were lying on the ground in front of it. That vehicle was reported stolen out of Milwaukee. Meijer merchandise was found inside.

The crash was captured by surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station.

Dash camera video from the first squad on the scene showed a black vehicle with damage to the passenger side. The driver of that vehicle stumbled out of the driver's side door -- unable to stand, and an officer approached with his gun drawn in a different direction.

A gold van suffered damage to the front bumper. The driver said she was at the stoplight when she and her passenger saw an SUV flying down the street. They didn't have time to do anything but brace for the impact. Miraculously, they both walked away with a few minor bumps and bruises.

The single occupant of the other vehicle that was struck was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released.

The two people in the vehicle that was being pursued were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Charges were referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
