Police: Man killed in crash near Holton and Keefe after driver 'sped off at a high rate of speed'

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County medical examiner confirmed one person was killed in a crash Saturday, Sept. 28 near Holton Street and Keefe Avenue.

Police said the victim was a 24-year-old man. The medical examiner identified him as Chance Coleman.

"Chance was a great person," said Penny Payne, friend of the victim. "Every time he was around us, he made people laugh. He has a new baby on the way, and won't even meet him or her. I don't know what will happen beyond this situation."

This began around 4:15 p.m. when officers near 2nd Lane and Nash Street saw a suspicious vehicle parked in the area, and as they passed the vehicle and made a turn at the end of the block, the driver of the silver Hyundai "sped off at a high rate of speed."

The officers went around the block onto Keefe Avenue in the direction of the vehicle and saw that it crashed near Keefe and Holton Street -- striking a white Ford truck.

"Didn't surprise me at all," said Nathan Garski. "They act as if it's a freeway."

Officers immediately called for medical attention for the sole occupant of the Hyundai. There were two people in the truck. They were treated and released at the scene.

"At no point was it a chase, because the accident happened so fast," police said. "The officers didn't actually see the vehicle until they got close to the 400 block of E. Keefe Street. They were not chasing the car."

"It makes me feel sad," said Dorothy Hoover. "I was sitting in the bar and I saw the coroner's truck drive up."

An investigation was ongoing.
