'She meant the world:' Family relieved to learn of arrest after mother of 6 fatally shot

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9 an arrest was made in connection with the fatal shooting of Debra Casey, a mother of six.

Casey, 45, was killed in a shooting near 14th and Orchard on Sunday morning, Oct. 6. Casey's family said she was shot several times while driving a vehicle that crashed into a tree.

Loved ones gathered for a vigil in Casey's honor Wednesday evening -- feeling some relief knowing someone was in custody for this crime.

"It makes me feel a lot better," said Christine Casey, Debra's sister. "I still miss her very much. She meant the world to me. She's my baby sister."

Instead of preparing to celebrate Debra Casey's 46th birthday in November, family was instead planning her funeral.

"She did not deserve what happened to her," said Jordan Barger, Debra's daughter. "She loved everybody. She was all about family."

Loved ones found comfort in each other as they gathered in the spot where Debra Casey took her last breath.

"It don't seem real at all," said Barger. "I think to this day, since it happened, that I'm in a dream. Who would think their mother would get shot? For what reason?"

They said they're determined to get justice for her.

"No matter what people do in life, they don't deserve to be shot and brutally beaten," said Christine Casey.

Debra Casey's family set up a GoFundMe.com account to raise money for funeral costs.
