MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office says two deaths near 22nd and Keefe Friday morning are being investigated as “probable carbon monoxide poisoning" -- but there are still many questions surrounding how this could have happened.

It was a very emotional scene as loved ones learned the tragic news. Tears spilled onto the cold concrete as police confirmed the heartbreaking information.

"Young kids, these are young kids," said an anonymous neighbor.

On Friday, two families learned the bodies of their loved ones were discovered inside a vehicle at 22nd and Keefe.

"This couldn't have happened last night. This had to have happened early this morning," said the neighbor.

Milwaukee police say they are investigating a dead on entry call. A 20-year-old female and a 20-year-old male were found inside a running car. Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful.

"How did nobody find them for so long?" asked Cassandra Ries, a friend of the victims.

Ries says she rushed to the scene when she learned her best friend was gone.

"She had an amazing personality. She was very outgoing anytime she was around. She just lit up the room," said Ries. "It's just going to be very hard without her."

She says the deceased are boyfriend and girlfriend.

"They were both very caring people," said Ries. "Anyone that knows them knows they had an extreme amount of love for each other."

For now, the Medical Examiner is investigating the deaths as carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Both of their families -- both of them are very amazing," said Ries. "It's just sad they have to go through something like this."

Those on the scene embraced and leaned on one another as they tried to make sense of the crushing loss.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Both families declined to comment on Friday.
