Man charged in 1994 homicide of woman in Madison

MADISON — Wisconsin prosecutors have charged an Indiana man in the 1994 homicide of a woman who was strangled and run over.

A complaint unsealed this week charges 52-year-old Willie Coleman with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of 40-year-old Lula Cunnigan.

Cunnigan’s body was found 25 years ago in Madison. Police say a DNA match in 2015 from the victim led them to Coleman.

Acting Madison Police Chief Vic Wahl told reporters Thursday that police never gave up on the case and “worked more than two decades to solve it.”

The Wisconsin State Journal reports while the 2015 DNA match linked Coleman to Cunnigan, Coleman could not be charged immediately, and the investigation continued for the next four years.

Coleman is being held in jail in Indiana on an unrelated offense.
