APPROVED: Waukesha Central Middle School to be named after Les Paul

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Sue Baker with the Les Paul Foundation confirms with FOX6 News a proposal to change the name of Waukesha Central Middle School to honor Les Paul has been approved.

The proposal passed on Wednesday night, June 11th with a 5-4 vote.

The school's new name will be the "Les Paul Middle School-Central Campus."

No decision has been made as to when the name change will take effect.

We're told a group of at least six alumni from Central Middle School showed up to the School Board meeting to voice their opposition to the name change.

Additionally, a petition was presented with about 170 signatures opposing the name change.

Les Paul passed away in 2009 -- and Waukesha, Wisconsin is his hometown.

Paul did attend class at Central Middle School -- although it was a junior high and high school at that time. He quit without graduating at the age of 17.

The Les Paul Foundation plans to cover the cost of changing the name and updating the school's signs.
