'Dreamers' wonder about immigration status

They are known as "Dreamers" – undocumented immigrants who are wondering about their legal status as President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.

"Many emotions have been going through me. Scared, fearful for people that are very vulnerable," said Fernanda Jimenez, a DACA recipient. 

Feeling uncertain

Some Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), like Jimenez, say they are feeling uncertain as President-elect Trump gears up for his second term. 

"We are prepared for the program to end anytime next year; anytime in the future under Trump or under the courts," Jimenez said.

This comes after Trump pledged the largest deportation in American history throughout this campaign. But over the weekend, the president-elect expressed the following: 

"We have to do something about the dreamers, because these are people that have been here at a very young age. And we are going to have to do something with them," Trump said. 

The president-elect added he is open to work with Democrats on a plan. 

Calls to immigration law firms

Immigration law firms in Milwaukee are seeing an influx of calls from people seeking legal advice about their status. 

"We are urging those who are eligible to apply for advance parole, who have DACA status to consult with an immigration attorney to see if they are eligible to apply for an emergency advance parole and to do that as soon as possible," said Daniel Gutierrez, a paralegal with Soberalski Immigration Law.

They encourage people to speak with an immigration attorney sooner rather than later to ensure they know their rights.

"Thanks to the program I was able to go to college. I graduated with my dual degree," Jimenez said. "I'm grateful for the program."
