Proposal to fund new plaza, safer streets

Milwaukee's redevelopment authority will consider amendments next week that, if approved, will provide $33 million to fund safer streets, transportation and "vibrant public spaces."

Milwaukee's redevelopment authority will consider amendments next week that, if approved, will provide $33 million to fund safer streets, transportation and "vibrant public spaces."

The amendments to Tax Incremental Finance Districts 56 and 84 would allow for "transformative projects" in the Historic Third Ward, Walker's Point and Riverfront areas. The items will be considered on Dec. 19.

District 84: West McKinley and West Juneau

The amendment to TID 84 would include $8 million for:

  • A new public plaza on Highland Avenue between King Drive and the Milwaukee River
  • Reconstruction of Vliet Street to improve public safety in the area, including traffic calming measures and a narrowing of the road

"I am very pleased to see these public improvements moving forward throughout my district," Ald. Robert Bauman said in a statement. "These investments will improve public safety and enhance the built environment."

Erie/Jefferson Riverwalk

If the amendment to Tax Incremental Finance District (TID) 56 is approved, the city said it would advance the city's "Complete Street" and "Vision Zero" goals.

It includes $25 million to advance Historic Third Ward and Walker's Point projects:

  • Reconstruction of portions of Water Street, Menomonee Street, and Lincoln Memorial Drive
  • New protected bikeways on Jefferson Street, Erie Street and Corcoran Avenue
  • Enhancements to the Kinnickinnic River Trail connections along Water Street, Pittsburgh Street, Young Street and Menomonee Street
  • Raised crosswalks on Erie Street
  • Improvements to Erie Street Plaza and Catalano Square

"There is no priority higher than making Milwaukee as safe as possible," Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a statement. "These improvements reinforce our commitment to combating reckless driving, increasing pedestrian accessibility, and improving our City’s vibrancy. Residents and visitors alike will feel and experience the positive impact of these enhancements."
