Republicans meeting again in search of Wisconsin budget deal

MADISON — Republican legislative leaders planned to meet again Monday afternoon as they continue to search for a way to wrap up work on the two-year state budget.

The current budget runs through June 30, and lawmakers have said they want to pass a new spending plan by then. If there is not one in place by July 1, the old budget remains in effect so government operations do not shut down.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald both planned to be in the Capitol for meetings Monday.

One of the largest, last issues dividing lawmakers is how to divvy up an $800 million cut in transportation funding. Some Republicans want to protect the Zoo Interchange in Milwaukee from delays, while others want to include it.
