WEST BEND, Wis. - West Bend police took a 16-year-old boy into custody early Wednesday morning, Sept. 9 in connection with a bomb threat posted on Snapchat. The threat led to an increased police presence at the high schools Wednesday.
According to police, around 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday, students from West Bend High Schools reported the suspicious Snapchat message to police. The message stated, “Don’t come to school tomorrow” and included a bomb emoji.
Police began an investigation and alerted the school district shortly after 10:30 p.m., working through the night to determine who was responsible.
"We knew we had something significant on our hands here," said Lt. Matthew Rohlinger, West Bend Police Department.

Early Wednesday morning, officers identified a 16-year-old boy who created the message and posted it publicly.
"We were able to track down the person who was using an internet connection," said Lt. Rohlinger.
At 4:30 a.m., West Bend officers took him into custody for terrorist threats, bomb threat and disorderly conduct. Police said he denied placing any explosive device at the school or having any intention of placing one.
The building was checked by staff and police and no devices were found.
"I found out about it like, today," said Connor Held, a West Bend senior. "People shouldn't do it because it is not smart and it can get them in trouble. You can't be dumb. You have to watch what you say."
"It doesn't matter if you were joking or if you were absolutely serious -- we are going to take it seriously," said Lt. Rohlinger. "You're going to end up in jail."
Police said they would be referring the matter to Washington County juvenile authorities.
Jen Wimmer, West Bend superintendent, released this statement to FOX6 News:
"Our students and staff at West Bend East and West High Schools can feel safe in the building today due to the individuals who reported this social media post to the West Bend Police Department. We thank our students for their report and encourage all to continue to say something when they see or hear of things like this. We also thank the West Bend Police Department for its investigation throughout the night to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Our highest priority is the safety of all the students and staff of the West Bend School District. Any perceived threat is taken very seriously."
