WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- A Waukesha County judge sentenced 31-year-old Carlos Ward of Milwaukee to four months in jail plus two years probation on Friday, March 22nd for his role in the hit-and-run crash that injured a disabled woman.
Ward admitted to being the man behind the wheel in a hit-and-run crash on June 8, 2012. The accident happened as Debbie Schultz walked with her service dog, Lexie. Lexie died from the crash. Schultz was left with a broken leg, a sprained ankle and an injured foot.
Ward was picked up two days after the accident -- and admitted his involvement. In court on Friday, he apologized to the court for his actions.
"I don't think he was sorry at all. I honestly don't believe he was sorry, at the bottom of my heart," said Schultz.
The judge sentenced Ward to four months in the county jail. It includes work release privileges.
Schultz is most pleads about a condition of Ward's sentence. He must have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance before getting in a car.
"I'm really glad they're going to force him to make sure he has insurance because he's gone without it and it's really tiring to see someone go in and out of the system like that," said Schultz.
Schultz has gotten another service dog that she is now training.
