MILWAUKEE - Portions of southeast Wisconsin have been added to a winter weather advisory from 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon through midnight Sunday.
A low pressure system will bring a wintry mix of precipitation during this time that can cause a light icy glaze on surfaces, causing slick and or icy travel on roads and bridges.
Some walking surfaces such as sidewalks and decks can be impacted as well.
Wisconsin is only a small area impacted by this system. Winter weather advisory headlines stretch as far west as South Dakota and Nebraska.
The worst ice impacts will be concentrated in eastern Iowa where an ice storm warning is in place.
Impacts will increase during Saturday midday and Saturday night but will start to subside by Sunday morning due to temperatures warming overnight.
The tricky part about this system is the temperature. While surface air temperatures will remain above freezing, the ground and pavement temperatures will be at or below freezing.
This is what will cause precipitation to freeze on surfaces, causing a greater risk for ice to form.
While most areas still have salt on them from previous events, the rain may help wash salt off further into Saturday evening.
The center of the low was in Kansas on Saturday morning but will continue to ride south of Wisconsin through the day.
Below is a timeline of the incoming precipitation and the changeover timeline. Precipitation can move into western counties during the late morning/early afternoon hours and continue to spread east throughout the rest of the day.
Enough rain could fall to give southeast Wisconsin 0.2" to 0.5" of precipitation.
Not everyone will have ice-covered roads, but the areas with the highest potential will be inland counties. Drive with caution if heading out today.
