Five people run for cover as Jeep slams into sheriff's squad car
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies narrowly avoid being struck by an out-of-control Jeep on southbound Interstate 894 early Saturday morning.
Deputies originally responded to a single-car crash on I-894 near Cleveland Ave. around 2:00 a.m. Saturday. As a result of the crash, the vehicle started on fire in the right distress lane. While deputies were tending to the fire and investigating the crash, another vehicle spun out across from the initial crash scene, coming to a stop, facing oncoming traffic next to the center median wall.
The driver of that car walked across the freeway to join the deputies. Seconds later, a third vehicle -- a Jeep Cherokee, spun out and headed towards the five people standing behind the squad at the first crash scene.
When they saw the Jeep slide across three lanes of traffic, deputies quickly pulled the people over the median wall and jumped to safety. The Jeep crashed into the squad just as they cleared the wall.
Because of the quick reaction from deputies, there were no injuries from this crash to those at the scene.
The 24-year-old male driver of the Jeep was cited from driving too fast for the conditions. Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the crashes, and all drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
