Santorum volunteers work hard in support on Election Day

BROOKFIELD -- Republican front-runner Mitt Romney clinched three primaries Tuesday night, April 3rd, including Wisconsin's primary. GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum was not in the Badger state Tuesday, April 3rd during Wisconsin's presidential primary, and instead, spent the day campaigning in his home state of Pennsylvania. However, Santorum was the first candidate on the ground in Wisconsin, and courted voters for about a week. Santorum's supporters pushed ahead, working hard for their candidate all day on Election Day, and watched the results come in Tuesday night.

The most recent polls show Santorum's one-time lead gone, but Pennsylvania's former senator insists this is not his last stand. Santorum says the race for the Republican nomination is only half over.

The former Pennsylvania senator spoke to supporters in his home state Tuesday night after losing primaries in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia to rival Mitt Romney.

But Santorum is predicting a win in Pennsylvania's April 24 primary. And he vows to compete in the rest of the GOP contests on the calendar.

Romney remains well ahead in delegates and is shifting to a general election matchup against President Barack Obama. Santorum says he won't let that happen and is poised to win a series of contests in May.

Volunteers gathered in Brookfield and worked the phones Tuesday, making calls on Santorum's behalf. There were three rooms of phone banks, and Santorum's Wisconsin campaign organizers say 12,000 calls were placed by 3:00 Tuesday afternoon. Officials say about 15,000 calls were made out of the Brookfield office alone by the time the polls close on Tuesday.

FOX6 News spoke with one volunteer who says he's praising himself for making the most phone calls. "The only way we're going to win this is with good people to get out and try to do something about it. A lot of good people consider us the silent majority, but you can't just be the silent majority. You have to step it up. That's why I thought I should apply myself," Santorum volunteer Jason Carl said.

Santorum volunteers watched the results come in live at Santorum's headquarters in Brookfield Tuesday night. FOX News declared Romney the winner in Wisconsin shortly after the polls closed Tuesday night. Romney also clinched the delegates in Maryland's primary.

Santorum spoke out after Maryland's results were announced from just north of Pittsburgh. "I ask you over the next three weeks, this is halftime, no marching bands. We're hitting the field. The clock starts tonight. We've got three weeks to go out here in PA and win this state, and after winning this state, the field looks a little different in May," Santorum said.
