Contact 6 helps couple settle out-of-state debt

MILWAUKEE -- A two-year fight with Illinois took a real toll on one Wisconsin couple! They asked FOX6's Contact 6 to help settle an out-of-state debt that didn't belong to them in the first place!

Kevin Rosenberg really likes cars and a good bargain. He buys and sells cars as he needs them -- some to drive and others just for parts.

When Kevin and his wife, Rhonda got two bills from a collection agency representing the Illinois Tollway, totaling close to $2,000, it really revved their engines.

"This is not our car!  We sold this car five months ago!  So what's going on here?" Kevin said.

Kevin says he accidentally left the plates from a red Ford Escort in the trunk of a silver Ford Escort. When he sold the silver car online, he forgot the plates from the red car were still inside.

Kevin quickly realized the new owner of the silver Escort must have been using the plates to whiz through Illinois I-PASS tolls without paying!

The charges piled up, leaving Kevin and Rhonda on the hook!

"Under Wisconsin law, the tags go with the person, and I'm like - I understand that, but I sold the car.  The car is not mine!" Rhonda said.

After almost two years of fighting, Kevin and Rhonda sent a letter to FOX6's Contact 6, who contacted the tollway.

"It was less than two weeks, and they sent us a letter saying we were no longer responsible for the fines," Kevin said.

"I'm very relieved. I'm very thankful," Rhonda said.

"I recommend any one who runs into a brick wall like what we did - PLEASE send a letter to Katrina!  They get things done!" Kevin said.

Contact 6 tracked down the new owner of Kevin's car in Illinois. He says he bought it for his son-in-law, who he says "made a mistake" but will pay back all $1,984.30.
