Beer Garden opens in Estabrook Park, first since Prohibition

MILWAUKEE -- Wednesday, June 20th was opening day for the Estabrook Park Biergarten -- the city's first beer garden in a park since Prohibition!

The idea for the beer garden was posed to Milwaukee County Parks Director Sue Black by Hans Weisgerber III. He's the owner of the Old German Beer Hall in downtown Milwaukee.

"It's kind of ironic -- it's the first day of summer, and it's hotter than heck out, and we reopened it, and it kinda gives me goosebumps like we did the right thing," Black said.

Milwaukee County receives a 20% commission on beer and 10% commission on food sales.

Weather permitting, the beer garden will be open seven days a week from noon until 9:00 p.m. from Memorial Day through the end of September, and then weekends only through November 24th.
