Some make adjustments Thursday due to extreme heat

MILWAUKEE -- For those outside on Thursday, June 28th when temperatures soared into the 90s with heat indices in the 100s and high humidity levels, keeping cool was a challenge, and some had to make some adjustments to their daily routines.

Jane Lukach took her grandson out of camp Thursday because she felt it was too hot for all-day outdoor activities. Lukach said she would prefer being able to monitor his exposure to the sun and heat.

"He's going to be timed for half an hour. That's enough for a very fair-skinned person to have sun," Lukach said.

Lukach said while she was allowing her grandson a little bit of time outdoors, for her, it was much too hot on Thursday, and said she was planning on staying mostly indoors, in the air conditioning.

Many took advantage Thursday of the air conditioning in area senior centers or libraries. Milwaukee Public Library had extended hours Thursday -- staying open until 8:00 p.m.

"We like to think of the library as a welcoming space at all times, and we're especially welcoming you this evening if you want to get out of the heat," Chris Arkenberg said.

The heat hampered some vendors and customers at Thursday's Fondy Farmers Market. The market closed early, but not before Paul Heck sold most of his items.

"A lot of customers grabbed it quite quickly and had to pack up early because the ice was gone. I was glad I sold all of my lettuce and most of my mushrooms," Heck said.

Mark Repiel was brave enough to host a yard sale in Thursday afternoon's sweltering heat on 51st, near Brown Deer Road. He said he was drinking a lot of water, and taking trips into his air-conditioned house for a break.

"We thought we'd spend the full three days doing it. We're the only ones crazy enough to be out here in this heat," Repiel said.

Repiel said he sold one of two air conditioners up for sale on Thursday, and was hopeful on a roasting hot day, he'd sell the other one quickly!
