Officials recover body of 69-year-old West Bend man from pond

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Newburg Fire officials say the body of a 69-year-old West Bend man was recovered from Sandy Knoll Park in the township of Trenton Tuesday evening, July 3rd.

The Washington County Dive Team and Flight for Life were called to the scene.

The initial report was a 69-year-old man swimming in the pond that had not come up for approximately 10 minutes.

One member of the Newburg Fire Department along with one Sheriff’s deputy entered the water initially and began searching the area where the man was last observed, but the water was too deep to continue searching without dive gear.

The Washington County Dive Team arrived at approximately 8:07pm and divers were in the water shortly thereafter.

The man was located at approximately 8:32pm by a member of the Newburg Fire Department who was scanning the area in a boat.

The man was located approximately 48 feet off shore in approximately six to eight feet of water.

The man had no pulse and was not breathing when he was brought to shore. CPR was initiated but rescue efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the divers was treated at the scene for possible heat exhaustion.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The man's name has not yet been released.
