Pedigree dog food recalled over choking risk

MILWAUKEE -- Mars Petcare US has issued a voluntary recall of three varieties of canned Pedigree weight management dog foods due to a potential choking risk.

Mars officials say the affected product may contain small pieces of blue plastic, which entered the food during the production process.

A BluePearl doctor said the chunks could get lodged in the dog's digestive tract and have to be removed surgically.

The products included in the recall are: Pedigree healthy weight premium ground entrée in meaty juices, UPC number 2310034974; Pedigree weight management meaty ground dinner beef and liver dinner in meaty juices, UPC number 2310001913 and Pedigree weight management meaty ground dinner chicken and rice dinner in meaty juices, UPC number 2310023045.

The lot codes on the bottom of the can will begin with 209, 210, 211 or 212 and a best before date that falls between 2/24/2014 and 3/23/2014.

No other products are included in the recall.

Anyone with the recalled products is advised to discard them immediately.
