Investigators scour Kansasville plane crash scene Monday

KANSASVILLE -- Crews recovered Monday, September 10th the remains of a pilot whose plane crashed Sunday in a Kansasville neighborhood. The small plane crashed into a garage between two homes, and neighbors say it's a miracle no one else was hurt or killed.

Stephen Sullivan snapped a few pictures Monday -- the day after his camera recorded unforgettable images. Other neighbors joined Sullivan in documenting the incident that stunned the tiny village just west of Union Grove.

"There was this 'woomph' -- kind of just a big thud, and the first thing that went through my mind was a plane crashed," Sullivan said.

As neighbors rushed to the scene, their hopes of saving the pilot shrunk as the flames grew more intense.

"It was all just orange flames and black smoke," Sullivan said.

The six-seat plane slammed into the garage behind a firefighter's home.

Don O'Rourke says his daughter was in the garage just minutes before the crash, but neither she, nor anyone else on the ground was injured.

"At this point, all I really cared about was that my daughter was out of the house because I knew she was the only one home," O'Rourke said.

The two homes closest to the crash site remained intact.

"I'm still completely amazed at the fact no one on the ground was injured," Racine County Sheriff's Sergeant David Coughlin said.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the pilot. They say the pilot was the only person on board the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA arrived Monday morning in Racine County. They'll be taking the wreckage to Oshkosh for their investigation.
