Event combines fashion/home improvement to help those with HIV/AIDS

WAUWATOSA -- An upcoming event at Elena's House will combine fashion and home improvement to help those with HIV/AIDs.

Each day is a blessing to Michael Brown, as he was diagnosed with HIV 30 years ago. Brown continues to have a positive outlook, although it's been a rough road. He has suffered two strokes due to AIDS, which has affected his mobility and speech.

"I was scared because I thought I was going to die. I`m still here and thank God about that," Brown said.

Brown has found refuge at Elena's House, -- a transitional and end of life home for people with HIV and AIDS.

"This is a very joyful place. Amidst all of the sadness and amidst the suffering there is great hope and joy here," Elena's House founder Mary Ellen Huwiler said.

In order to keep Elena's House open and help with expenses, Callen Construction began putting on a rather unique fundraiser. It's called Refashion for Life, and features a fashion show combining the latest in home improvement products and clothing.

"Imagine some of the most beautiful dresses and clothes for women, with a beautiful model walking down the runway with a beautiful piece of tile," Callen Construction owner Tom Callen said.

Over the past four years, Refashion for Life has raised $90,000 for Elena's House.

"Refashion for Life has really kept us going so that I don`t wake up every night trying to figure out how we are going to pay our bills. It`s been a wonderful gift to us," Huwiler said.

Refashion for Life is planned for Wednesday, September 26th at Callen Construction in Muskego. Tickets are $40 and the event begins at 5:30 p.m.
