MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the first major freeway closures are set for the Zoo Interchange reconstruction project.

On Thursday, January 24th, contractors will begin work to demolish the Greenfield Ave. bridge over I-894/US 45. Demolition is scheduled this weekend.

Motorists should be aware of the following freeway impacts:

Wednesday (1/23)

  • Right lanes closed in both directions on I-894/US 45 at Greenfield Ave (9:30 p.m.-4:30 a.m.)
  • I-94 EB to I-894/US45 SB Zoo Interchange system ramp closed (9:30 p.m.-4:30 a.m.)
  • Greenfield Ave will close long-term over I-894/US45 (between 98th and 101st St) for bridge reconstruction.
  • The Greenfield Ave EB entrance ramp to I-894/US45 NB will close long-term for bridge reconstruction.
  • The Greenfield Ave entrance ramp to I-894/US45 SB will close long-term for bridge reconstruction.

Saturday (1/26) demolition

  • I-894/US 45 NB closed at National Ave (10 p.m.-8 a.m.)
  • I-94 WB to I-894/US45 SB system ramp closed (10 p.m.-8 a.m.)
  • I-94 EB to I-894/US45 SB system ramp closed (10 p.m.-8 a.m.)
  • US45 SB to I-894/US45 SB system ramp closed (10 p.m.-8 a.m.)

Access to businesses and residences within the closure area will be maintained at all times. That is welcome news to Jeff Zenoni. He's the co-owner of Uncle Bob's Music Center at 103rd and Greenfield. He's not too worried about losing customers during the eight-month-long bridge construction project.

"If they can get here, they're going to get here. Because like me, I only have so much time to do the things I need to do," said Zenoni. "And if I like a store, I'll get there even if I have to go around the block. So in the long run it will be a little bit better. They'll have smoother roads to drive on."

Construction project manager Jay Obenberger says if you regularly use the Greenfield Ave. bridge, you may want to take Highway 100, National Ave., or 54th St. to get around.

"So if you're coming north on I-894, you will still be able to exit and go east on Greenfield Avenue. And if you use Greenfield Avenue to go west, you'll still be able to exit Greenfield Avenue and go west. You'll just not be able to go over the bridge," said Obenberger.

For the demolition Friday night, I-894 will be completely closed from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday.
