Storm destroys homes, vehicles in Washington, Illinois

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WITI) -- A tornado that ripped through Washington, Illinois on Sunday, November 17th is being described as the most powerful November storm in decades.

Hundreds of buildings were damaged and more than 100 people were hurt when storms moved in and an EF4 tornado touched down. At least six in Illinois were killed.

The twister took homes and reduced them to shingle and siding shrapnel. It also took almost everything from Sarah Adams.

"We're just so lucky to be alive," said Adams.

Adams' husband Dan was spared -- and she managed to recover her wedding dress and...

"Our wedding rings were on us and our cell phones. And that's literally it," said Adams.

Sarah hit under a stairwell as the storm came through in what she describes as 15 seconds of train noise and massive force. It leveled the three-bedroom apartment she once called home.

The high winds parked a car where the garage used to be, and a boat where part of the home was.

As state workers assess the damage, there are signs the neighborhood will get back to normal.
