Neighborhood House teens work to end gun violence

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- After a fatal shooting in the Concordia neighborhood earlier this month, a group of Milwaukee teens is taking it upon themselves to spread a message and stop gun violence.

At a gun violence prevention summit on Saturday, February 22nd at the Neighborhood House, the teens perform skits to convey situations that happen all too often.

"It will help make a picture in their minds so they can actually see what might go on at a scene of a shooting so they can connect in that way," said summit hostess Maya McCullough.

The room at the summit is decorated with stop signs, symbolizing the goal of the group.

"To spread awareness of gun violence in Milwaukee," said McCullough. "Because people need to understand they have the power to stop it in their community."

Through stories from victims and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, to law enforcement sharing their concerns, testimonies served to encourage others to do their part in creating a safe community.

"That rule of no snitching, wanted to break that down and bring a more personal approach to gun violence in the City of Milwaukee to hope that young people like themselves would stand up and say something when they see or hear about gun violence issues," said program coordinator James Austin.

Teens at the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee continue to plan similar events, including an interactive art exhibit about the effects of gun violence.
