Growing "mound of dirt" dubbed "Mount Stallis" raising eyebrows near 894

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- For months, a growing mound of dirt has been raising eyebrows in West Allis. It's located near I-894 and Greenfield Avenue -- and it's been dubbed "Mount Stallis."

Those who consider the huge pile of dirt to be an eyesore may be pleased to learn about the plans for the pile.

"It's just getting bigger and bigger. It's just getting worse. It's an eyesore. It looks horrible," Rise Paulos said.

"When I come up here, I look and I say 'oh, the garbage is still there.' I say 'well, maybe tomorrow it will be gone,' but that day never came yet," Paulos' mother, Lorraine Mente said.
Pro Bu Colls, a Christian bookstore, is located on Greenfield Avenue, near "Mount Stallis."

"(The store) is kinda like, right at the hub of everything that Milwaukee has -- so it's a great location. The mound was growing, and it was just so dirty and flying everywhere. I just termed it the 'Mountain of Mud,'" Pro Bu Colls employee Karen Scharnick said.

Scharnick says she's been wondering what's to become of the pile of dirt.

"We have no idea how long it will be there, or if it will be there indefinitely," Scharnick said.

Michael Pyritz with the Wisconsin DOT says the dirt comes from the Zoo Interchange construction project -- and says there's a plan for the giant mound of dirt.

"I understand where there could be some confusion and some concern as to what's exactly going on here. What's going to eventually end up there will be an earthen berm. It's going to be landscaped. We use that type of material and those types of opportunities to help create barriers between the freeway and the local businesses and residents," Pyritz said.

Pyritz says the berm's details and dimensions have not been finalized, and public input is welcome in determining its direction.
