SENTENCED: Man charged after wrong-way driving crash will serve time behind bars

MILWAUKEE COUNTY (WITI) -- 30-year-old Scott Kontowicz has pleaded guilty two a charge of OWI (second offense) in connection with a wrong-way driving incident that occurred on February 21st in Greenfield.

Kontowicz had a plea hearing on Monday, May 12th -- and was also sentenced in the case.

Kontowicz will serve 120 days in the House of Correction with credit for 49 days served.

Kontowicz also had his driving privileges revoked for one year -- and after that, he must have an ignition interlock device installed for a period of 18 months.

Kontowicz was charged with OWI (second offense) after he struck an SUV head on.

A Greenfield police officer and her husband witnessed the crash.

Kontowicz was driving on the wrong side of Beloit Road in Greenfield on February 21st -- when he struck a Ford Explorer head on.

A criminal complaint says Kontowicz was asked how much he had been drinking prior to the crash, and he said “a lot.”

Police say Kontowicz attempted to put the car in gear after the crash, but authorities were able to take his keys.

Kontowicz and his passenger were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The individual in the SUV that was struck didn’t require medical attention.

Kontowicz has a restitution hearing scheduled for July 10th.
