Traffic alert: Closures planned for stretch of I-94 this weekend

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- People who drive near the zoo interchange are used to seeing construction by now, so the full lanes closures coming this weekend shouldn't come as a big surprise. Still, officials are making sure they get the word out about what’s going to be happening in the next few days.

“The contractor is installing a 15 inch and 20 inch storm sewer across the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94,” said Brian Perz, the Project Lead for the 76th Street WisDOT Project.

On Friday night from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. Saturday, the westbound lanes of I-94 will be closed just east of the Zoo Interchange. Saturday, crews will move on to the eastbound lanes, closing those at 10:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. Sunday.

“This completes drainage that needs to flow from both sides of the freeway into the median that ties into the main storm sewer,” said Perz.

Perz acknowledges that it could come as an inconvenience for some, but he said they are trying to limit that hassle as much as possible.

“We do most of our work on the freeway at night to inconvenience the least amount of people, that's when volumes are low. We realize it is an inconvenience to some. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and looking forward to building a more free-flowing interchange that's coming up real soon,” said Perz.
