Off the tracks: Train headed to Chicago from Milwaukee derails; 10 cars involved

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Union Pacific spokesperson tells FOX6 News a train traveling from Milwaukee to Chicago derailed near Clement and Holt on Milwaukee's south side.

It happened around 9:00 a.m. Sunday, June 15th.

A Union Pacific spokesperson says 10 train cars derailed.

"I heard a terrible screeching sound. I've never heard such a sound. It was loud. It scared me a little bit because I thought it was derailing," Pamela Rogers, who lives in an assisted living home on the partially closed down road said.

No injuries were reported.

The Saint Francis Fire Department was the first to arrive on scene.

Milwaukee Fire Department officials tell FOX6 News firefighters worked to put out a small grass fire near the train -- caused by sparks from the derailment.

Of the 10 cars that derailed, we're told six cars were carrying ash, three cars were carrying clay, and one car was empty.

It is expected to take crews 10-12 hours to clean up the scene. Union Pacific has said it hopes to restore rail service Sunday night or Monday.

A barricade has been set up at Clement and Holt. The intersection is closed.

Drivers had to take alternate routes -- including at least one ambulance, according to a caregiver in Rogers' assisted living complex.
