"The impact is amazing:" Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity kicks off Blitz Build

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- For most of his life, 81-year-old Bob Kaiser has worked as a carpenter, but it was his heart that led him to this construction project.

"The ability to do it is, I think, my blessing and so I can share my blessing with others," said Kaiser.

Bob along with dozens of other volunteers are spending the week drilling, hammering, and sawing for the Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity  Blitz Build.

"We do three Blitzs a year, it's when we get a group of volunteers and we put up multiple houses in one week," said Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity Construction Director Michael Cockroft.

This week they're building four new homes and renovating a fifth.

All of the homes are then sold with no down payment and no interest on the mortgage to low-income families who meet certain qualifications.

"We acquire all of our rehabs for tax foreclosures from the city of Milwaukee as well as our vacant land we acquire that from the city of Milwaukee as well," said Cockroft.

This is the second year of Habitat for Humanity's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in Washington Park.

"The impact is amazing, to be able to see this neighborhood transform from a bunch of dilapidated buildings and vacant lots to 8 or 9 new constructions houses," said Cockroft.

Providing good homes and making safer neighborhoods for those who need it most.
