Non life-threatening situation: 11-year-old boy becomes trapped in sand dune in Sheboygan

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Sheboygan County Sheriff's officials tell FOX6 News an 11-year-old boy became trapped in a sand dune at the Kohler-Andrae State Park on Saturday, August 9th.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office, the Wisconsin DNR, Town of Wilson first responders and Oostburg ambulance personnel responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m.

We're told the boy was digging a hole in the sand dune, and became trapped in the sand. The dunes were described as being 50-60 feet tall. The entire side of the dune apparently came down on the boy while he was digging.

Trying to get the child out of the dune and the sand proved challenging because as emergency crews dug into the sand, more sand fell down onto the boy. However, crews were able to get the boy's head out of the sand relatively quickly.

The boy was found to be breathing on his own.

Emergency personnel were attending to the child, and it was not believed to be a life-threatening situation.

However, Sheriff's officials say the boy was taken to Children's Hospital via Flight for Life as a precaution.
