Mentally fit to stand trial? Doctor's report ordered for Waukesha stabbing suspect Anissa Weier

WAUKESHA COUNTY (WITI) — 12-year-old Anissa Weier, one of two young girls accused of trying to kill a classmate in an attempt to please fictional online character "Slenderman" will be examined by a doctor to determine whether she is fit to stand trial.

12-year-old Morgan Geyser has been found not competent to stand trial. She has been committed for treatment. Geyser will continue to be evaluated and treated, and if she becomes competent, the court will be notified and court officials could schedule a hearing.

It now appears that Weier may be headed down the same path.

On Monday, September 15th, Weier and her attorney stood before a judge -- her attorney telling the court a doctor who spoke with Weier is questioning whether she is competent to proceed in the serious legal case against her.

In May, Weier and Geyser are accused of luring a 12-year-old friend into the woods in Waukesha -- stabbing her 19 times, and nearly ending her life.

When questioned, the girls told officials they stabbed their friend to please "Slenderman" -- a character they read about online.

Geyser has been committed for treatment, and during Weier's court appearance Monday, even the prosecution thought it best to have Weier examined to determine competency.

"Judge I don't see there's any way legally -- under the scheme that's set out, that anything can go forward when a doubt arises regarding competence," prosecutor Ted Szczupakiewicz said.

The judge agreed, and a medical report will be completed within the next month.

"Someone who's 12 in our society is not considered competent to marry, get a drink, enter the Army, any of these things without their parents or guardians -- yet we ask them to proceed in a case of this nature," Weier's attorney Maura McMahon said.

The young victim in this case is recovering, and has returned to school. If you wish to help the family, you can make a donation at http://www.gofundme.com/heartsforhealingwi or make a deposit at any BMO Harris Bank.
